Career advice for mums: from coach Ruth Kudzi

I am a Business and mindset coach who works with business owners to help them build and scale their businesses by focusing on strategy, mindset and action.

I have been in business for nearly 3 years and have worked with 1000’s of women worldwide creating 8 different income streams and growing my impact and influence month on month.

I am a best selling author and my programs combine coaching, mentoring and teaching.

Take some time to reflect on what is going on. What is triggering this feeling of no longer counting? If you can identify the cause you can then think about action. Speak to someone you trust at work about how you are feeling and ask for some positive feedback so that you can start rebuilding your confidence.

Consider how you would approach the meeting if you are feeling confident. What would be different? What would you do? Then start to take small actions so that you can build your confidence. Record these actions in your journal so you gradually build your confidence. It might be preparing what to say, committing to saying one thing or sharing what you are going to say with someone else.

I feel so guilty every time I drop my son off at nursery when I go to work. How can I stop feeling like this?

What is it that you feel guilty about? This could be around your beliefs around what you “should” be doing. Be honest with yourself – why did you make the choice to leave your son at nursery? What does work mean to you personally and to your family? You need to take a look at the bigger picture. In terms of the nursery speak to them and share your concerns – they are used to it. Many nurseries will send photos and updates throughout the day which can help you to feel more secure.

I’ve just set up my own Virtual Assistant business, and I’ve signed up to attend a couple of local networking events. But I’m so nervous about talking to new people. Do you have any tips for how I can feel confident and introduce myself at these types of events?

Practice and prepare. Think about what you want to say about yourself and some conversation starters. Then set an intention for each event – it could be speaking to one person or getting a new business card or connection. If you can see who is going in advance, connect with people on social media and start to build relationships. Finally, remember everyone feels like this so look for someone else looking nervous, smile at them and start up a conversation – you will realise you are not alone.
