Time management. It sounds so boring, so corporate. But I believe that effective time management is vital for busy mamas. Rather than being boring, time management can provide space to focus on doing the things we love with the people we love. Sounds good right?

But before we get into that, can I ask you a few questions:

  • Do you ever feel overwhelmed by all that you have to accomplish?
  • Can your brain relax? Or is it constantly remembering things that need to get done?
  • Do you forget to do important things, or end up having to rush doing them because you’ve left then to the last minute?

How would it feel to:

  • get thoughts off your brain, and onto your to-do list helping you to relax?
  • organise your tasks and break them down into more manageable projects?
  • prioritise, plan and focus on what you need to accomplish helping you to be more productive?
  • cross off tasks once you’ve done them, giving you a real sense of accomplishment and achievement?

Sounds blissful to me! Apparently, the average person can store up to 7 items in their short-term memory for no more than 20 – 30 seconds at a time. So if you have more than 7 things to remember, you get the picture… This is why some sort of memory aid is so crucial. Source

WHAT DOES “TIME MANAGEMENT” ACTUALLY MEAN?

Here’s a definition from the Collins Dictionary:

Time management is the process of deciding on the order in which you will do tasks, and making sure that they are done on schedule.

WHY TIME MANAGEMENT IS IMPORTANT TO ME

I’m a wife, a mother to three children (aged 8 and under), and I work as a Consultant managing multiple clients at a time. I would say that I’m a reasonably organised person, but I know that I have a LOT of room for improvement. There is still far too much stress and overwhelm in my life.

I’m on a mission to streamline my life and put effective systems in place to reduce stress and make sure I have time to focus on the things that matter… which are my relationship with God, my self-care, my husband and our children.

I’ve been researching productivity and time management for ages now, and there is so much information out there… a lot of it is really excellent. But very little of it is targetted at busy mamas that are juggling home life, raising kids, work, other family commitments, plus our own hopes and dreams.

So I’ve made a commitment to study from these leaders in the field of productivity and time management, and filter everything I’m learning through the lens of being a busy working mama.

I don’t have huge chunks of time to work on my goals, which means that I have to work smarter, not harder. I also realise that when I’m stressed, the people that usually get the brunt of it are my amazing husband and beautiful kids.

I need to put systems in place so that I can enjoy the incredible family that God has blessed me with. I have dreams and desires burning within me that I know that if I don’t get my act together now, these dreams and desires will never be accomplished.

It sounds dramatic, I know! But time goes so fast, and if I don’t make changes now, 5 years will have passed and I’ll still be struggling with these feelings of overwhelm.

Often my solution to not managing my time properly is to stay up late to try and get things done, which is fine if it’s only once in a while. But it’s recently become a more regular habit that I have to break. My health is important to me, and I’m determined to look after it and I’m aiming for a minimum of 7 (ideally 8!) hours sleep every night.
